Railroad Evangelistic Association

Past

Luther S. Harkey was a railroad engineer from Sanford, Florida. Soon after his conversion to Christ in 1926, the fire of the gospel message burned in his heart to share the Good News of his salvation with his fellow railroad employees. Luther did this fervently and faithfully until he went home to be with the Lord in May, 1949.

As the gospel fire burned in his heart for the lost, Luther's vision also began to grow to reach out to those railroad employees who were beyond his sphere of personal witness. Luther believed the printed page was the way he could “Go into all the world and preach the gospel”. In September of 1938 the first Railroad Evangelist magazine was published.

Joining together with others Luther found and incorporated The Railroad Evangelistic Association in Sanford, Florida in January of 1941, as a non-denominational evangelistic work.

Over the years men and women have caught the vision of REA and have freely given of their time, talent and finances to continue this unique literature evangelistic-missionary work.

Catch the vision!

Present

Today, over 60 years later we are still committed to the same vision and goals that were set forth from the beginning of REA.

REA’s purpose is two-fold: We exist to encourage, strengthen, challenge and inspire Christian railroad people world wide and to proclaim the Good News of salvation by faith in Jesus Christ.

The Railroad Evangelist magazine continues to be sent out and distributed across America and around the world as a literature evangelistic-missionary work.

Some new developments in REA’s sixty year history took place this past year. We have dedicated two pages for the model railroad hobbyist and two for the rail fan enthusiast. Another first: is we now have our own world wide web page. Also a CD of railroad and gospel hymns, dedicated to REA was produced and sung by Rev. Paul Campbell. Paul is REA’s National Chaplain and Master of Ceremonies.

Each September REA holds their National Convention in beautiful Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It is a wonderful week of fellowship, worship and prayer. During this time new REA officers are elected and further business of REA is conducted.

Everyone is welcome to attend the National Convention, including children. For more information, map, and historic surrounding activities contact us at the address on the back of this brochure.

Plan now to attend!

Future

As we look ahead there are many new opportunities as we lift our vision to reach the model railroad hobbyist and rail fan enthusiasts. We are excited and challenged as we look for new ways to impact this unique mission field with the power of the gospel.

A number of ideas are still in the preliminary stages but some of the things we are looking at: is to produce railroad related discipleship material for new converts, developing a children’s Vacation Bible School with a rr theme, a children gospel railroad coloring book, placing ads in railroad related trade journeys and train publications, place the Railroad Evangelist in more hobby shops and places of business, develop a 30-minute video of REA’s history and it’s future and a 1-800-REA-PRAY phone line for people to call for prayer and or REA information.

Through our REA Prayer Covenant (free upon request) we are asking God to rise up a new generation of railroad “laborers” who will catch the vision of REA and will commit themselves with their time, talent and resources for the continuing proclamation of the Good News through the Railroad Evangelist magazine.

Since 1938 the Good News of Jesus Christ has been published through the RAILROAD EVANGELIST magazine. We are committed to continue as we believe everyone, everywhere needs to be on the right track to heaven through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
